Fire Prevention Week: October
7-11
The
National Fire Protection Association set Oct. 7th-11th as Fire
Prevention Week. The themes for the week are being safe
while cooking and practicing home fire escape plans. This is also an excellent time to check
batteries in smoke alarms.
Fire
Prevention Week was observed by Valentine Elementary
Schools. On Monday, the Valentine Volunteer Fire
Department visited the K-2nd grades. Smokey Bear and
Sparky were special visitors. The firemen
demonstrated what they would look like while wearing masks and all
their other equipment. They told the students to never hide and
to make a lot of noise, if they are
trapped.
Fireman Matt Sandoz introduces "Sparky" to the elementary students.
According tothe National
Fire Protection Agency, most families have a home fire escape plan,
but most do not practice it.Fourth graders watched
a video called Smoke Detectives. It emphasized
the importance of having a home fire escape plan andpracticing E.D.I.T.H (Exit Drills In the
Home.)Fifth graders included fire safety at the
beginning of the year during their Health and Safety
Unit. All classrooms have focused on the
importance of being safe before, during, and after a
fire.
Good "Ole Smokey" greets the Valentine Elementary students during Fire Prevention Week!
Thank you to the Valentine Fire Department, and
a special thank you to the volunteer firemen that visited our
school.
