VES 4th Graders are Volunteers for Veterans
December 02, 2007
Leo Brinda Unit 90 of the American Legion Auxiliary is proud to
announce that fourth graders at Valentine Elementary School are
volunteers for veterans.
Students of Mrs. Obermiller, Mrs. Tinant, Mrs. Brown, and Mrs.
Lancaster have been crafting "googlie-eyed pine cone turkeys" for
local veterans since early November. The pine cones were
donated by Robert Connot, turkeys constructed by the fourth grade,
and supplies and delivery provided by Unit 90.The turkeys were
adorable, and involved five steps to complete. Some of the
turkeys were completed with partners or small groups, while others
were completed by the assembly line method. The students made enough
turkeys so that each student took one home. The other turkeys
were delivered to local veterans on the eve of Thanksgiving.
Katelynn Jackson and Montana Markus, third grade students, helped
to deliver them. WWII, Korean, and Vietnam War Veterans were the
selected groups to receive the turkeys. In the past
years there have been enough turkeys to share with the hospital and
assisted living/nursing homes.
