Cody-Kilgore Student Wins Cherry County Spelling Bee
The Cherry County Spelling Bee was held Friday, February 26 at the Valentine High School auditorium. Eighteen spellers, grades 3-8, took part in this year’s contest.
Grace Ford, a sixth grader from Cody-Kilgore, was champion, with Will Major, a fifth grader from Valentine Elementary School, winning the runner-up award. Ford will represent Cherry County in the Midwest Spelling Bee in Omaha, Nebraska on March 13. In addition, Ford received a $100 savings bond and Major received a $50 savings bond from the Rodgers family. Presenting these awards were Lisa Rodgers-Mathis and her daughter Macey Mathis.
First, Second and Third place finishers from the written qualifying test included--
Third Grade: Bradi Larabee (Kewanee), Bailey Witt (Valentine), and Reaghan Shelbourne (Valentine).
Fouth Grade: Lesli Schneider (Cody-Kilgore), Courtney Galloway (Cody-Kilgore), and Shaylynn Henry (Cody-Kilgore). Wyatt Hitchcock (Valentine), a fourth grade qualifier, was unable to attend. Wyatt was the third place finisher in the fourth grade written qualifying test.
Fifth Grade: Amani Nadeau (Valentine), Will Major (Valentine), and Britley Schlueter (Wood Lake)
Sixth Grade: Grace Ford (Cody-Kilgore), Tanner O’Neill (Cody-Kilgore), and Jesse Schell (Simeon East)
Seventh Grade: Cameron Perrett (Valentine), Jacy Miller (Valentine), and Dustin Gourd (Cody-Kilgore)
Eighth Grade: Ivan Rosfeld (Valentine), Trevor Bukaske (Valentine), and Jorday Mercure (Valentine)
Martha Miller was the pronouncer for this year’s Spelling Bee. Janet Parkhurst and Pam Sprenkle were the judges.
